Formate levels are measured to detect inhalant abuse of methanol-containing products. Studies suggest that inhalant abusers of methanol products may have significantly elevated methanol and formic acid levels. Additionally, abusers have a low risk for methanol-induced complications, including visual dysfunction and refractory acidosis. Source: NCBI PubMed, PMID:16984844
