Glutamic acid is a dicarboxylic amino acid with acidic R groups. It is a cosubstrate with alanine for alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and with aspartate for aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Glutamic acid plays a key role in cellular metabolism and the removal of excess nitrogen. Glutamic acid undergoes deamination, removes nitrogen from amino acids, and allows excretion in the form of urea. It is increased in acidic aminoaciduria. Source: Regenstrief Institute
