Descriptions
Histamine is an organic nitrogen compound involved in local immune responses as well as regulating physiological function in the gut and acting as a neurotransmitter. Histamine triggers the inflammatory response. As part of an immune response to foreign pathogens, histamine is produced by basophils and by mast cells found in nearby connective tissues. Histamine increases the permeability of the capillaries to white blood cells and some proteins, to allow them to engage pathogens in the infected tissues. An amine derived by enzymatic decarboxylation of HISTIDINE. It is a powerful stimulant of gastric secretion, a constrictor of bronchial smooth muscle, a vasodilator, and also a centrally acting neurotransmitter. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
Histamine is derived from the decarboxylation of histidine. Histamine is then either stored or rapidly inactivated by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. Deficiency of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase triggers an allergic reaction as the histamine then builds up. Most histamine is stored in mast cells or basophils in the body. IgE is bound to the surface of these cells and interacts with allergens to degranulate and release histamine when exposed to the appropriate antigen. Source: Regenstrief Institute
