Version 2.78

Descriptions

A nonreducing disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose linked via their anomeric carbons. It is obtained commercially from sugarcane, sugar beet (beta vulgaris), and other plants and used extensively as a food and a sweetener. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

Sucrose is broken down into its constituent monosaccharides, glucose and fructose, which are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. Sucrose provides a quick source of energy, followed by a rapid rise in blood glucose upon ingestion. Overconsumption has been linked with adverse health effects, including tooth decay, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and gout. Increased levels of sucrose in urine may be caused by disturbances of intensinal absorbtion, such as in celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, and gastroenteritis. Source: Regenstrief LOINC, PMID:902663
