Parvovirus B19 (B19 virus) was the first (and, until 2005, only) human parvovirus to be discovered, by chance in 1975 by the Australian virologist Yvonne Cossart. The name B19 refers to the location of the virus in the Petri dish where it was growing initially. Parovovirus causes Fifth disease - highly contagious pediatric disease that is minimally symptomatic. The main reason for testing is in pregnant women because of concern that it may cause fetal loss. In immunocompetent patients antibody testing is sufficient. UpToDate indicates that IgG and IGM are usually both tested. Source: Regenstrief Help
Human parvovirus B19 is a small, non-enveloped single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the genus Erythrovirus in the Parvoviridae family. Human erythroviruses have three genotypes: genotype 1 (B19 strains), genotype 2 (A6 strains) and genotype 3 (V9/D91.1 strains) [Classification and nomenclature of viruses. Archives of Virology 1991;Suppl. 2:320-326.] The clinical manifestations of Parovirus B19 infection can vary significantly and range from asymptomatic or minor illness in children, including erythema infectiosium (fifth disease), to varying degrees of arthropathy in adults, to severe disease, including transient aplastic anemia in individuals with hematological disorders and severe fetal anemia which can lead to hydrops fetalis and fetal death. Although primarily transmitted by the respiratory route, there are many reports in the literature of transmission through plasma products, especially coagulation factors, due to: 1) the size of plasma pools; 2) the incidence of acute, imperceptible infections; 3) high levels of virus in a viremic donation (up to 1012 IU/mL); and 4) resistance to commonly used viral inactivation/removal procedures.
