Descriptions
Orange sinensis refers to the citrus tree Citrus sinensis and its fruit. The orange is an ancient hybrid possibly between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and tangerine (Citrus reticulata). It is a small tree, growing to about 10 m tall, with thorny shoots and evergreen leaves 4-10 cm long. The word orange ultimately comes from Sanskrit narang. Oranges originated in southeast Asia, in either India, Pakistan, Vietnam or southern China. The fruit of Citrus sinensis is called sweet orange to distinguish it from Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange. In a number of languages, it is known as a Chinese apple. Oranges, with orange-colored peels and juicy fruit in separable quarter-moon-shaped sections, come from an evergreen tree growing to 9 m tall. Oranges are the most important commercial citrus fruit. They were cultivated over 3,000 years ago in China. They now thrive around the world in warm-climate areas including Portugal, Spain, North Africa and the southern United States. Orange may induce symptoms of food allergy in sensitised individuals. Symptoms reported included nausea, pruritis, abdominal cramping, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, oral itching, angioedema, dyspnoea, bronchospasm, rhinitis, laryngeal oedema, urticaria, hypotension, and anaphylaxis. Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) is a common symptom. Orange may also contribute to multifood allergy. Copyright Copyright © 2006 Phadia AB. Source: ImmunoCap, ImmunoCap
