Description
Megakaryopoiesis is the process by which bone marrow progenitor cells (hematopoietic stem cells, HSC) develop into mature megakaryocytes (MKs). MKs then produce platelets, a process called thrombopoesis. MKs play a role in the pathogenesis of acute megakaryocytic leukaemia and a subset of myeloproliferative neoplasms, including essential thrombocythemia and primary myelofibrosis. Abnormal megakaryopoiesis and thrombopoiesis can lead to morbidity and mortality from bleeding due to moderate to severe thrombocytopenia. Source: NCBI PubMed, PMID: 22018018
