Astragalus (As-trá-ga-lus) is a large genus of about 2,000 species of herbs and small shrubs, belonging to the legume family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. The genus is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Common names include milk-vetch (most species), locoweed (in western US, some species) and goat's-thorn (A. gummifer, A. tragacanthus). Tragacanth gum is one of oldest known natural emulsifiers. The substance is an exudate obtained from the Astragalus species of shrub, an evergreen, which is found in Iran, Asia Minor and Syria.
Tragacanth gum may rarely induce allergy symptoms in sensitised individuals. Asthma and contact dermatitis have been described. Excess ingestion can result in diarrhoea, abdominal pain, gas production or constipation.
