Version 2.77

Description

The complement terminal complement complex (TCC) is comprised of complements C5b, C6, C7, C8, and C9 (C5b-9) and is a marker of complement activation. There are two forms of TCC: 1. Soluble TCC is formed when C5b-7 that is not associated with a lipid membrane binds to C8 and C9. SC5b-9 is soluble TCC that is bound to a plasma protein such as S-protein (vitronectin) or clusterin. Plasma SC5b-9 is the non-functional form of C5b-9 and is a non-specific marker of complement activation and inflammation.; 2. The membrane attack complex (MAC), a barrel-like structure spanning a cell's lipid bilayer that mediates complement cytotoxicity, is formed when C8 and C9 bind to C5b-7 that is already associated with a membrane, and is the functional form of C5b-9.
