A metallic element (Zn, atomic number 30 and atomic weight 65.38) necessary in the diet. It constitutes an essential part of many enzymes, and plays an important role in protein synthesis and in cell division. Zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8) is an islet beta-cell secretory membrane protein. ZnT8 autoantibodies (ZnT8A) are present in type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and are a marker for disease. When combined with established autoantibody markers, including glutamate decarboxylase (GADA), protein tyrosine phosphatase IA2 (IA2A), antibodies to insulin (IAA), and islet cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ICA), the ZnT8 antibody test improves diagnostic sensitivity in suspected cases of type 1 DM.
