Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is performed to obtain a patient specimen for cytologic examination. This is in contrast to non-FNA aspiration of fluid, which may be done for drainage and/or non-cytologic laboratory studies, though such aspirated fluid may also be sent for cytologic exam.
