Plant sterol ester intake
Active
Description
Sterols (also known as steroid alcohols) have cellular functions in plants similar to those of cholesterol in animals. More than 40 plant sterols (or phytosterols) have been identified, but sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol are the most abundant. The major plant stanols are sitostanol and campestanol, and are less abundant in nature than sterols. A high intake of these substances impairs uptake of cholesterol from the gut, thus reducing total and LDL cholesterol. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
