Description
Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii are fungi species known to cause pulmonary and systemic cryptococcosis. C. neoformans causes severe meningitis and meningo-encephalitis in patients with advanced HIV/AIDS. C. gattii is found primarily in tropical and subtropical climates and is capable of causing cryptococcosis in non-immunocompromised patients. More recently, an outbreak of C. gattii occurred in British Columbia, possibly due to global warming. PMCID: PMC535360 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
