Version 2.78

Description

Maltose binding proteins (MBPs) are soluble carrier proteins that, when bound to recombinant proteins, decrease aggregation and increase solubility of those recombinant proteins. Fusion protein technology is used in allergy testing for recombinant allergens, such as most of the ImmunoCAP recombinant allergens [Phadia Misc Allergen: MBP-maltose-binding-protein/] that otherwise would not stay in solution, which is necessary for testing purposes. Testing for antibodies to MBP alone (without the recombinant allergen) can serve as a negative control to make sure that antibody response to the MBP-allergen molecule is in response to the allergen part of the molecule, and not the MBP. For example, if a patient has an IgE response to a particular MBP-allergen fused molecule and does not have a response to MBP alone, the MBP-allergen response is likely due to the allergen itself. However, if a patient has a response to both the MBP-allergen fused molecule and MBP alone, then the result is inconclusive in regards to the allergen. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
