Calcium-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II activity
Active
Description
CaM-Kinase II is a protein altering kinase that is activated when the intercellular Ca2+ concentrations increases and saturates the calmodulin (CaM) calcium binding sites. CaM-Kinase II is important in synaptic plasticity and learning and memory due to involvement in translating intracellular Ca2+ signals PMCID: PMC3617042. Increased CaM Kinase II activity has been linked to an immune response to a group A streptococcus infection, which has been implicated in tic disorder and neuropsychiatric abnormalities, although this is controversial.
