Washout rate
Active
Description
The washout rate (WR) is a measure of how quickly a tracer is cleared. In cardiac nuclear imaging, the WR is calculated based on tracer uptake in early and delayed images. In one study of patients on multi-drug chemotherapy regimens, the washout rate for patients on chemotherapy was significantly higher compared to controls before any other clinical signs of cardiotoxicity were apparent. PMID: 23173103 Other studies have shown that patients with heart failure of varying etiologies also have a higher WR compared to controls, and an elevated WR may be an indicator for the risk of sudden cardiac death and fatal arrhythmias. However, patients who respond to treatment with beta blockers and/or renin-angiotensin-aldosterone inhibitors, as evidenced by improvement in NYHA functional class, have been found to have a decrease in WR on follow-up imaging studies.
