gonadotropin releasing hormone
Active
Description
Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is a hormone secreted by the hypothalamus in order to stimulate the release of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and gonadotropins from the pituitary gland. GnRH release is crucial to the reproductive cycles of both males and females. In males, GnRH is instrumental in the production of sperm cells in the testes. In females, GnRH is necessary for conception and regulation of the menstrual cycle. To ensure the pituitary is coordinating properly with GnRH, an LH response to GnRH blood test is conducted. In this test, a shot of GnRH is administered to a patient and the LH level is observed over a specified period of time. The LH response to GnRH test helps to distinguish between primary and secondary hypogonadism. PMID: 20451543 [MedlinePlus Encyclopedia:003709] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
