Description
Bacillus atrophaeus (formerly Bacillus subtilis var. niger) is a gram-positive, spore-forming bacteria that produces black pigment. B. atrophaeus is used as a biological indicator for efficacy testing and sterilization control. Historically, it has also been used to study spore inactivation, as a plant growth promoter, in treatment evaluation and as a potential adjuvant or vehicle for vaccines.
