Version 2.78

Description

Sulfonamide antimicrobials, such as sulfamethazine (or sulfadimidine) and sulfathiazole, are synthetic antimicrobial agents that contain the sulfonamide group. Sulfonamides inhibit the enzymatic conversion of pteridine and p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to dihydropteroic acid by competing with PABA for the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, an enzyme involved in folate synthesis. [PubChem:sulfanilamide] They are used to treat bacterial, mycobacterial and protozoal infections. Adverse reactions to sulfonamides include fever, acute hemolytic anemia, hematuria, and hepatic necrosis. PMCID: PMC1643675 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
