Parathyrin.1-84
Active
Description
Parathyrin 1-84 (PTH (1-84)) is the biologically active hormone that regulates the calcium and phosphate levels in the circulation. PTH (1-84) is originally produced as a 118-amino acid polypeptide in the parathyroid glands. It is cleaved twice to form a functional 84-amino acid peptide that is stored in the parathyroid cells. The first 34 amino acids bind to the type 1 PTH/PTH-related peptide receptor that is expressed primarily in bone, kidney, cartilage, vessels, and certain developing organs. PMID: 26303600 The half-life of PTH (1-84) is 2-4 minutes, after which it is degraded into a carboxyl (C)- or amino (N)-terminal fragment. The C-fragments have a half-life of 5-10 minutes, are cleared by the kidneys, and can accumulate in the circulation during chronic kidney disease. Some evidence suggests that N-terminally truncated fragment PTH (7-84) may interact with receptors that regulate bone resorption and serum calcium concentrations that could lead to the quantification of other PTH fragments.[https://www.uptodate.com/contents/parathyroid-hormone-assays-and-their-clinical-use] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
