Version 2.78

Description

Different methods of lipoprotein analysis produce varying results. Electrophoresis separates lipoprotein fractions based on size and charge and can differentiate between lipoprotein classes as well as subparticles. HDL corresponds to the electrophoretic alpha band, LDL to the beta band, IDL to the broad beta band, and VLDL to the pre-beta band. Each of those bands can be further classified into small and large particles. LDL can be further characterized as very small, small, medium, and large, and even further as very small-a, very small-b, etc. Different patterns of lipoprotein fractions are associated with varying risk of cardiovascular disease. Patients with pattern B (higher levels of small and very small LDL particles) have a higher risk of CVD compared to patients with pattern A (higher levels of medium and large LDL particles).
