Description

Acetaminophen-cysteine adduct (APAP-CYS) levels are measured in serum or plasma for the determination of liver injury due to acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity. PMID: 27641661 The reactive metabolite of acetaminophen, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), is detoxified by glutathione at therapeutic doses. However, when glutathione is depleted, the metabolite covalently binds to cysteine groups on proteins and forms a acetaminophen-cysteine conjugate (3-(cystein-S-yl)-acetaminophen, APAP-CYS), which is thought to lead to hepatotoxicity. PMID: 11901099 Source: LOINC , An Immunoassay to Rapidly Measure Acetaminophen Protein Adducts Accurately Identifies Patients With Acute Liver Injury or Failure
