Arsenobetaine
Active
Description
Arsenic compounds can be categorized into three groups: inorganic, organic, and arsine gas. Inorganic arsenic compounds are thought to be more toxic compared to organic arsenic compounds, while arsine gas is the most toxic. Environmental exposure occurs mainly through food, water, soil, and air. Arsenite, or AS(III), is a trivalent form of arsenic, and arsenate, or AS(V), is a pentavalent form; both are water-soluble. Monomethylarsonate (MMA) and dimethylarsinate (DMA) are organic arsenic compounds that are formed via metabolism of arsenite and arsenate species; both MMA and DMA are widely used in agriculture. Arsenobetaine and arsenocholine are both organic forms of arsenic that are found in seafood. [https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/csem/csem.asp?csem=1&po=4] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
