aPTT mixing study panel
Active
Description
aPTT Mixing studies are tests performed on blood plasma used to distinguish factor deficiencies from factor inhibitors, such as lupus anticoagulants, or specific factor inhibitors, such as antibodies directed against factor VIII). If the result obtained with the immediate normal plasma mixture corrects to within the reference range, a factor deficiency or specific factor inhibitor is suspected. No correction after addition of normal plasma suggests an immediately acting nonspecific inhibitor such as lupus anticoagulant (or heparin). After incubation, an aPTT result equivalent to that of the original mixture is indicative of a factor deficiency, whereas initial correction, but prolongation after incubation suggests a time-dependent inhibitor such as a specific factor VIII inhibitor. Mixing studies sometimes need to be interpreted in the context of specific reagents used (such as lupus-sensitive reagents). Source: Regenstrief LOINC,
