Ganglioside GM2
Active
Description
Gangliosides are present in the cell membrane and are found predominantly in the nervous system. Ganglioside antibodies against different gangliosides have been associated with different conditions. The GM2 ganglioside, also called Tay-Sachs ganglioside, is a minor component of adult nervous tissue, and pathological storage of GM2 in neurons leads to motor neuron disease. Anti-GM2 IgM antibodies have been found in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome that is associated with CMV infection. Anti-GM2 antibodies have also been associated with an acute inflammatory neuropathy as a potentially paraneoplastic phenomenon. PMID: 23341581 Source: Regenstrief LOINC , PMID: 23341581
