Measurement of sucrose levels in urine collected for 5 hours after oral ingestion of a sugar solution (e.g. mannitol and lactulose). Sucrose is broken down into its constituent monosaccharides, glucose and fructose, which are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. Sucrose provides a quick source of energy, followed by a rapid rise in blood glucose upon ingestion. Overconsumption has been linked with adverse health effects, including tooth decay, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and gout.
